Visual Assist 2026.5 released!

Summary:

2026.5 is here.

This one's a big one. This release is headlined by the project-wide code inspections that now allows users to run all of Visual Assist’s 400+ code inspections across projects.

Project-wide code inspections are finally here. This new code inspections update now lets you run all 400+ of Visual Assist's code inspections across your projects, instead of only the file you're currently working in. When a clang-tidy fix is available, you can apply it to one issue or clean up all matching issues at once.

And yes, there's AI in this release too. VA Agent brings a chat window into Visual Studio, with support for Claude Code, Codex, or the local model available through VA Intelligence. Ask explanations about your code in Ask Mode, or use the Edits allowed mode to let the agent change it automatically.

There are more useful changes under the hood that came from user requests and reports. This includes new quick toggles in Rename, Change Signature, and Encapsulate Field, added support for other clang-tidy settings, and other security updates. There’s also a handful of navigation, parsing, and UI fixes among other things.

There’s too much to share in this summary, so we highly implore you to explore the full release post for the full details on everything added in this release and how to use them.

Lastly, let us know what you think of the new VA Agent. Give it a try and let us know what works, what doesn't, and what you'd like to see next. You can send us a message or join the conversation on Discord.

Bug fixes:

  • Fixed Open File in Solution ignoring every search term after the first, which also made exclusion terms such as -cover hide every file.
  • Fixed Find References including files and extensions that are excluded from parsing.
  • Fixed Goto (Alt+G) going to the previous symbol when used right after moving the caret quickly.
  • Fixed the caret staying in its old position after clearing the List Methods in File (Alt+M) filter.
  • Fixed Visual Assist syntax coloring missing in CUDA files.
  • Fixed blank entries in the VA View file and symbol drop-down lists.
  • Fixed Create Implementation duplicating the signature when a macro such as UFUNCTION precedes a function with a const return type.
  • Fixed typing an opening bracket or quote over a VA Snippet placeholder surrounding it instead of replacing it in Visual Studio 2022 and 2026.
  • Fixed files with a designer, such as XAML, opening in the designer instead of the code view when Visual Assist opens them.
  • Restored Alt+key shortcuts for the settings in Find Symbol in Solution, Open File in Solution, and GoTo Member, and added quick toggles that show the current settings.
  • Fixed the missing search and clear button in the VA Hashtags filter.
  • Fixed Options dialog tooltips that were missing, showed only their image, or showed only their first paragraph.
  • Fixed Source Links GitHub tooltips showing an Int32 overflow error instead of the issue's details.
  • Fixed the Open File in Solution hint about NuGet headers pointing to the old location of the 'Show only files in the current solution' option.
  • Fixed the Welcome Page opening as a blank window on systems without the Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime.
  • Fixed the spelling of VA Hashtags on the Welcome Page.
  • Fixed the VA Intelligence local model download failing on any dropped connection; it now retries and resumes.
  • Fixed the VA Intelligence setup message naming Ctrl+Shift+Q instead of Alt+Shift+Q as the shortcut for the Quick Actions and Refactorings menu.
  • Fixed the link to the VA Intelligence FAQ in the Setup VA Intelligence dialog.

Compatibility and stability:

  • Fixed Visual Assist failing to load on Windows Server 2016.
  • Fixed Visual Assist failing to load on Windows 7.
  • Fixed the navigation bar never appearing on Windows 8.1 and earlier.
  • Fixed an intermittent 'SetSite failed' error for the Visual Assist package when Visual Studio 2015 to 2019 starts.
  • Fixed an occasional Visual Studio 2022 crash when the navigation bar rebuilt its drop-down list while the editor was resized.
  • Fixed an occasional Visual Studio 2022 crash when Visual Assist handed a completion list back to the IDE.
  • Fixed a rare crash in Visual Studio 2019 and earlier when the symbol database was under memory pressure.
  • Fixed the installer rendering continuously, which made it sluggish in virtual machines.

General Release Build 2026.4 (2615)

Requires active software maintenance through general release date: 2026.06.30

NEW Refreshed installer with a cleaner, modernized look.
NEW Smoother, faster initial parse on first open.
NEW Updated Clang for current language support.
Visual Assist 2026.4 released!

Summary:

Visual Assist 2026.4 cleans up the first thing you see (the installer) and the first thing you wait on when you open a new project (the initial parse).

The installer got a visual and UX refresh. It’s got the same flow and same options, nothing new to learn; We’ve just rebuilt it so that it’s more intuitive, flows more smoothly, and more in line with the modern tools you’re accustomed to today. You'll see it on a fresh install and every time you update, on Windows 10 and newer. Older Windows versions keep the existing installer for compatibility’s sake.

Under the hood, the initial parse is also smoother: the short hangs that intermittently happen while Visual Assist indexed a freshly opened solution are gone, and the parse itself is faster. On top of that, a round of fixes — a debugger crash, an Include Cleaner edge case, a Navigation Bar rendering glitch, and more.

This is a smaller, polish-and-stability release between larger ones. Several bigger efforts are running in parallel, and while we’re excited to share those as soon as we can, we hope all our users find this build useful.

If you have any comments, suggestions, or encounter any errors, please send us a message or start a thread on our Discord.

Bug fixes:

  • Fixed a crash in the debugger that could occur when typing $.
  • Fixed an Include Cleaner code inspection issue where it wouldn't work correctly on the first line of a source file.
  • Fixed issue where IDE Find in Files results were not colored by VA. (view coloration option must be enabled)
  • Fixed the About page so copied info matches the format shown elsewhere.

General Release Build 2026.3 (2610)

Requires active software maintenance through general release date: 2026.04.03

Visual Assist 2026.3 released
NEW Change Code (VA Intelligence): Use AI to transform selected code using natural language.
  • Select a block of code and describe the change you want
  • Preview results in a built-in diff view before applying
  • Supports a wide range of transformations (refactoring, optimization, restructuring)
  • Designed for flexible, exploratory workflows
NEW Added support for .hlsli files (HLSL includes)
️NEW Improved Diff View behavior when using AI

Summary:

Visual Assist 2026.3 expands VA Intelligence with Change Code.

This release introduces a major expansion of AI-assisted workflows through a new Change Code function added under VA Intelligence. This allows developers to iteratively modify code using natural language with full diff visibility.

Alongside this, the release also features:

  • Added support for .hlsli (HLSL) includes
  • Performance improvements for Unreal Engine macro parsing and expansion
  • Stability fixes (startup timing, memory leak, plugin compatibility)
  • Small but meaningful UX refinements, particularly around AI interactions and configuration workflows

Overall, this release will set the tone for where we’re taking our AI-assisted workflows. It’s also a stability release, inspired by users who submitted bug reports and issues.

As always, we appreciate everyone sharing feedback. If you haven’t tried it, try our new AI assistant chatbot to get quick answers based on the official documentation, or to get access to the support team.
